Undertones, 2022
Undertones is a series of three handwoven, hand dyed designs measuring 18 inches in width by 30 inches in length. Utilizing overshot weave structures on a Dobby loom, Undertones was created after extensive research into the history of overshot woven coverlets. The overshot style of weaving was popularized during the antebellum period in the United States and remained a craft practice of women in the Appalachian region, where I and several generations of my family are from. To build upon this rich, handcraft tradition, I expanded its visual language using bright and spontaneous color to contrast with the rigidity of the woven pattern.
